Light&Shadow - ChapterOne

Book One:To Protect.

. . . .

The sun’s rays began to shimmer around the green forests and among it, a petite child no less than the age of 8 dressed in a dark brown cloak over the child’s head, is running among the branches and big trees. In the child’s arms were some foreign objects that the child did not know of, yet the little one eagerly wanted to show this little discovery to the person that the child known of, once the destination has reached. Excitement building up, this child had taken more in pace of running. Once the child seeing the clearing in front that illuminated with lights, the child knows better it came closer.

Running steadily and stepping out of the forests, the child finally arrived to the destination- a river decorated the clearings around the green oasis; never had most of the people known the existence of this beautiful nature, except this young one and that person- someone that this young one know of.

Speaking of which, the person that the child wanted eagerly to meet was sitting under the big shady tree beside the river- a girl who looked between 15 or 16 years old, leaning against the bark of the tree as her long silver bangs partially covered her peaceful sleeping face. Her flawless skin looks extraordinary with the combination of her long pony tailed silver colored hair that gleamed in radiant.

The child halted almost immediately at the sight, now tip toeing to the silver haired girl while trying its best to keep everything quiet, but only stumbled and crashed on the ground when the silver girl spoke with her eyes still closed, “What do you want now, Kumiko?”

Said child named Kumiko, only gawked in amazement at the quick-sense by this older girl and quickly stood up, “Mou! Mizuki nee-chan so cool! How do you know it’s me?” The child put the foreign objects back inside her pockets and pulled back the cloak’s hood over her head revealing a little girl's face with short brunette hair along a pair of caramel eyes, widen in amazement. A sigh came from the silver girl as she opened one eye revealing a ruby itself staring at the little girl, “You’re so predictable kid, besides I can smell you from far away from here.”

“Can you teach me how to do that, nee-chan??!” The girl leaped towards Mizuki and sat happily beside the older girl whom finally opened both of her ruby eyes and stared at Kumiko with an obvious refusal on her face, “No.”

“W-why?!” Kumiko looked at her with a slightly dejected look that can kill any bystanders’ mentality because of her ‘cuteness’, but only Mizuki wasn’t faze by it one bit. Instead she just only gave the little girl a mild glare that can give anyone a shiver down their spines and buckles weakly on their knees- but just like the former results, the brunette also didn’t get scared of it and only pouted; any other person would think it was a miracle that this little girl was brave enough to face those scary glares, “Because you’re not like me, I’m a half breed feline and you’re not. After all, you’re just too weak to learn this kind of thing.” She growled coldly.

“I’m not weak!” Kumiko tried to growl out by copying Mizuki, but instead, it turns into a pout or mewl of disappointment. The girl sobbed internally, ‘I suck at this...’

“Heh,” Mizuki looked the other way to hide a faint smirk on her face, “See? You can’t even protest or growl properly.”

Desperate hands cling unto Mizuki’s clothes, “Please teach me!” Kumiko wailed.

“No.” The same refusal came from the half breed, yet the toddler did not give up, “Please!”

“Absolutely not,” And another, it goes in circle, “Pretty please!”

“Request denied,”

“I’m begging you, Nee-chan! You were so cool and graceful the time when you were saving me from those vampires!” Kumiko’s amber eyes dazzling in admiration as she looked up at the silver girl whom only raised an eyebrow at Kumiko as she kept on rambling more compliments about the silver haired girl; on and on just like the previous days and so on.

Mizuki sighed as she remembered the first meeting with the little brunette. Seriously, it was only meant to be a little walk around the forest; enjoying the view and the great smell of night’s air, but then later it turn into something more than just a little stroll in the dark forest when she had accidentally came across the little brunette that almost getting into trouble with the vampires and upon having no mood of seeing bloodshed of another, she mildly fought them with a bored expression. And that’s how their relationship begun; at the beginning, little Kumiko always annoyed the silver head to no end because of her habit of following her like a little lost kitten who just found an owner and  her other bad habit of complimenting some stranger that she barely knew, like Mizuki, for example. But as times passes by, Mizuki began to adapt to it, though she doesn’t know why.

But due to this friendly relations, what surprises Mizuki more was that, no matter how many times she gave a glare that was feared by most of the people (and sometimes when Mizuki gave a bored stare, everyone mistook her stare as something more and scary), this Kumiko seems to pay no mind to it and instead grew more clingy towards Mizuki.

That drove Mizuki into several headaches and even some pain in the back at times (Note: Because Kumiko always gets into trouble for example; easily tripping, almost falling from a high place and many other things. And once again, Mizuki doesn’t know why she kept on saving Kumiko from trouble.). How she wished to kill her right there and then. But something deep inside her held her from doing so; why is that? For now, she doesn’t know. Again. This little Kumiko sure is a mystery, for some reason she had some sort of aura that can attract people (or possibly any other beings on this planet), whether it was unintentionally or not.

'Should be that a gift or a cursed?' The hybrid thought with a shudder.

“Mi. Zu. Ki!!!” Kumiko’s whine make the older girl dropped back in reality and she turned to give a glare at Kumiko. But alas, Kumiko didn’t faze under her glare at all, “What?” She growled out, but only made the brunette grin, “Since you don't want to teach me. How about you show me your kitty ears again?” Her childish giggled resounds the forest made the breeze come and go between them.

Silence dropped between them.

“No.”

“MIZUKI! You’re so mean!” The little girl cried in depression- Good Lord, how much energy does she have for screaming? Mizuki knew the waterfall of tears shall begin; the half breed only put her hands on her ears and sighed, ‘When will this child ever be grown up?’

After few moments of ear-splitting from Kumiko, the brunette puff her cheeks in mild annoyance, “Fine! If that’s how it is, then I won’t show you what I found around the cave!” She looked away and crossed her little arms in an irritated fashion. Mizuki looked at her and raise an eyebrow, “What cave? You didn’t get into any trouble again, did you?”

Kumiko turned her head and dropped her hands to her sides with a smile that showed a success of getting the silver haired girl’s attention, “I don’t know which cave it was!-” That made Mizuki groaned, “-But don’t worry, I didn’t get into any trouble! There are no vampires in there!” She stopped and took a rather large piece of white, hinted with gold, egg shell, “But look! I’ve never seen such a BIG-” She motion her hands flap open with a childish grin before putting them back again to her sides, “-EGG SHELL! It’s huge! And I thought it was a dinosaur!—But then again, dinosaurs are already extinct so…  I want to show this to you… Do you have any idea what is this, Mizu-nee?” She handed the piece of egg shell to Mizuki. Mizuki received it and brought it closer for a better look and at the same time, Kumiko sat nearer to the silver feline.

“Impossible… But... This is a Red Falcon’s…” Mizuki widen her ruby eyes at the sight of the golden egg shell. Kumiko tilted her head in confusion, “Red Falcon? Is it that great phoenix that the old folks always mentioned off?”

Mizuki shook her head, “No, that’s ‘The Light and Shadow’ you’re talking about. Red Falcon is different; they’re among the third strongest mythical ‘Wing Creatures’ on the land...”

“I don’t understand this… Mythical… creatures… Whatever it is…” Kumiko pouts in disappointment which receive a sigh from Mizuki as she put down the egg shell on her lap and stared at Kumiko’s face, “Fine, the most basic thing, have you ever heard of ‘The Wing Creatures of The Land’?”

“Um… They were birds?” Kumiko smiled sheepishly- obviously she doesn’t know that fact at all. Mizuki glared at her childish traits, “No, they were more than just mere birds... They were creatures that resemble birds and were the strongest of all of the land; this include even your human clan, the vampires, werewolves and my clan- The Half Feline breeds-”

“Won’t ‘Neko’ sound better?” Kumiko interrupted her.

“Neko? It’s another meaning for cats, right?” Mizuki raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah…!” The brunette grins and later put a finger on her chin as she stared up animatedly in a way of thinking, “Mizuki… Neko… That sounds catchy! ‘Beautiful Moon Cat’, it suits you, with you have some liking towards the full moon, and! And! Whoever had silver hair color suits well with the full moon too! It’s so pretty!” Kumiko giggle childishly and for the first time in the half breed’s life; a warm feeling tickled inside of her; never once in her life have any of her other clan members compliment her mother’s and her haired color and what’s more surprising, was the pure honesty in it. But her face showed nothing for that as she coughed, “Oh, I see. Thank you, Kumiko.”

“You’re welcome, Mizuki Neko-nee!” Kumiko beamed, “So~! How many are there ‘The Wing Creatures of The Land’? Not many of our folks mentioning that… and… That’s sort of long name….” She trailed off, poked her forehead with pure confusions and didn’t even realize a faint smile from the silver haired girl.

“They divided into three groups… The third, which also the lowest amongst the three were the Red Falcon, they have the power to manipulate the greatest fire and some of the people believed it can also make it rain of fire on the skies.”

The little brunette winced in fear at that fact.

“Second,” Mizuki ignored her fear; it was typical for a child like Kumiko, “Was the ‘Storm Dragon’. Just like the name, it was a dragon who can manipulate greatest storms on the planet and their roars is rumored that it can split the ground or cause an earthquake.” Just in cue, the little brunette attempted to ask with shaky voice, “A-and the strongest i-is, ‘The Light and Shadow’ right? T-They were phoenix? What do they look like? And what can they d-do?”

Mizuki stopped and frown, “To be honest, no one knows what they looked like, including myself and my clan.” She sighed but continued anyway, “But we do heard some another rumors saying that they were phoenix because they saw a shadow of its shape and humongous golden and rich red colored wings, they were even larger than the Storm Dragon’s wings itself – and manage to swallow the entire Red Falcon and Storm Dragon in one swipe.”

“That’s so cool.” The innocence girl muttered widens her amber orbs in amazement, her fear disappear just like that.

“Yet dangerous…” Mizuki added, “Also, I heard another one, that claims that it was actually an angel who was only guarding and leading them from preventing any chaos or destruction flickering around the land, because the Storm Dragon and Red Falcon were the type that craved for blood just like vampires, and also an addition for our clans hunting down their tracks for the past long years or centuries for their powers. I don’t know about the werewolves though, but I do heard they wanted to overpower the strongest level clan.” She frowned.

'Ceh, feline and wolves were no different.' Mizuki thought in disgusted.

“Have any of the werewolves did?” The brunette asked innocently- Mizuki shook her head.

“And I don’t know who spread that kind of rumor, but it was one hell of a confusing one." Mizuki continue.

“So, basically, The Light and Shadow also resembles the Wing Creatures but they were just guarding the other two from us hunting them?” Kumiko raise an eyebrow in slight confusion but received a shrug from Mizuki, “You can say that.”

“How strong are they?”

“They manage to tame the wild Storm Dragon and Red Falcon at the same time- and both of these species sided with them.  And don’t ask me how they tame those beasts- because I still find it impossible.”

“And why they named as ‘The Light and Shadow’?”

“I heard because they can balance the two most powerful elements, Light and Dark. Geez kid, you have lots of questions.”

“Cool! It’s like they have the power of Ying and Yang!” Kumiko punched both fists in the air with a giggle and almost fell backwards lest Mizuki caught her with a swift of her hand, “I swear… You’re one troublesome kid…” She pulled back Kumiko in a sitting position while the brunette sheepishly smiled, “Thank you again!”

Kumiko looked up at the orange-blaze colored skies and knew it was time for her to head home, “Ne, I got to go, it’s already sunset…” Kumiko stood up and dust out the imaginary dusts from her small white dress, “Thanks again for everything, Mizuki-nee!” She looked down at the silver feline with a genuine small smile and dashed away as she makes her way back home.

“Seriously…” Mizuki sighed and grabbed the dark brown cloak beside her, “She forgot her cloak. That kid, honestly she’s a forgetful one.”Mizuki stood where she sat on and dust out any imaginary dusts on her black clothes, and later she went off to opposite directions, not bothering to follow the girl’s path to give back her belongings; she can always give it back to the brunette tomorrow.

Their meeting was becoming a daily routine to them, even without Mizuki’s ever realizing at the start. I guess that’s how everything will become more amusing.

~~~*~~~
In the midst of the black night and a half crescent moon upon, Mizuki hopped trees to trees and out to the clearing of the forests before landing gracefully on the cliff with the brown cloak in her hand. With her eyes closed just now, she open them back revealing a pair of glowing red orbs with  silted pupils in the way cats would do in hunting in the night. She stood straight and looked down at the sight before; her village. Like any other normal village, happy occasions and little chatters from the villagers resounded around; except this was not normal people as they say. These are the infamous half feline breed gathered and stayed together which at the end it turn into a village placed for the half breed themselves.
The silver haired girl leap down from the cliff and entered the village entrance swiftly and elegantly. The chatters stopped and muted when the silver-haired girl entered and they all started to stare at her only.
“Isn’t that Miss Mizuki?” Mizuki then heard whispers started to erupt.
“Yea, that’s her alright. After all she’s the only Half Breed that has silver hair color in the village,”
“I heard that the color of silver can bring bad luck, is it true?”
“Shush! She’ll kill you if you said that! You should know she’s one of the strongest out of any of us!” Mizuki ignored and took as an every routine- which it was.
Just as the whispers started, a voice started to bravely speak to the infamous silver feline, “We smell a human scent on you, Miss Mizuki.” That statement caught the silver feline’s attention along with two presences halted in front of her, preventing her from passing them. She glared at them and some of the witnesses shivered under her glare and the two persons in front of her flinched in response but kept steady. Beads of sweats rolled down their foreheads.
“So?” Mizuki stated shortly feeling annoyed. But one of the two males kept on, “How do you manage to catch a human?”
“I didn’t catch her nor had any attention to hunt her. She just followed me almost everywhere.” Mizuki truthfully stated, seeing no point of hiding it anyway even so she knew the consequences after she said it. The two males looked at each other with light frowns on their faces but it quickly evaporates into mild confusion and suspicions when they stared back at Mizuki, “By any chance, did you make an acquaintance with a human?” They sneered at the last part showing how much they despised of the beings that have been called humans. Mizuki only shrugged, “You can say that,” Mizuki much a less of a stubborn person to even say yes when it comes to her friendship towards the little brunette.
Several gasps in the village response when the girl answered and next followed by another handful of whispers that continue nonstop then- Mizuki sighed, “Excuse me, but out of my way. I want to pass,” She walked passed them and ignored from the incoming calls from the two males just now.
Nothing can stop Mizuki Neko, as if she cares about some rules and consequences?
Little did she know, the silver feline had grown fonder towards the human brunette from the very start of their friendly relationship.
That little human must surely have done something until she can manage to make The Deadlier Grim Ripper of the village grown softer towards humans, was the villagers’ thought as they watched her back slowly vanished in the dark.
Too bad Mizuki didn’t read minds.
~~~*~~~

Resound bells chimed louder that snapped Mizuki awake from her dreamless sleep. She jolted awake on the bed which makes her other cat companion startled out of his sleep next to her. His tail flickered in annoyance and glared at her as she continued looked at the window with a frown, “Mistress! Geez! Don’t scare me like that! You should know it’s in the middle of the night- Wait, isn’t that the…” He trailed off as his cat-rabbit hybrid ears perked up at the chimed bells continuously rang. She stared at the window and saw many flickers of lights and even heard some yells made by the villagers.

“The emergency bells; someone pulled it.” Mizuki finished nodding and stared at the cat hybrid beside her, “Jinx, take a look from above the village’s rooftops while I go on the ground,” she kicked the cover off and Jinx nodded. “Hexy! You’re going along with Jinx.” The silver haired yelled and a yawn was heard at the other side of the dark room, “I heard ya already, I got it.” Another similar cat yawn again as she stood from her own basket and stretched her back. Her tail swayed in lazy way.

“Hurry up, you old hag!” Jinx jumped on the windowsill and hissed in annoyance. The female silver and white cat glared at her little cat-brother, “Yare, yare, my little insolent brother. I already said I’m coming.” And just in a blur, they’ve gone. Mizuki took her precious belt and clipped it around her waist along some other small bags accompanied with it.

She ran outside and went around the village, but the village was nearly deserted and most of the people are gone. The silver haired checked the town almost everywhere at the empty sight. She frowned, what just happened around here?

“Mizuki!” She looked up at the voice calling and saw Hexy standing on top of the rooftop, “Where’s Jinx?” The half feline asked.

“He’s at the center of the village, he said he smelled human over there and wanted to check it out. You’re better hurry!” Hexy answered, turned and leaped one rooftop onto another as she also makes her way over there. Mizuki sighed, and let her cat’s blood flown to make full access in her power. Black cat ears and tail appeared on her frame. She grins in delight as she closed her ruby eyes and take a sniff in the air, it does smell human but something not right. There’s a hint of unknown power mixed that human scent- that means something must have happen that caused that human to be in fear or anger and unknowingly at the same time, that mysterious power begin to boil inside that mortal- but other than that this scent was also….

Mizuki snapped her red eyes open in realization. Worry erupted inside of her, “KUMIKO!?” She yelled and quickly makes a mad dash towards the supposed-destination with surprise in her face, ‘What is she doing here?’ she thought and gritted her teeth with a thought of the little brunette’s face in her mind. Her worry begins to escalate.

‘I swear on my Bloody Red Scythe, if they did something to her, I’m going to slaughter them, piece by piece, slowly and painfully, whether they are my clan or not!’ She growled inwardly as she saw the clearing in front of her. Just like Hexy said, many of the villagers gathered in one point and chatters overheard like;

“Kill this human!”

“Torture her!”

“Skin her alive!”

But what caught Mizuki’s ears the most was the sound of the little brunette crying among all the noises. Mizuki snapped, “Silence!” And just like that, everyone’s head quickly snapped back at the only silver feline with surprised faces and silence hung in the air except for the little child’s cry. Mizuki walked forward to the crowd and instant, they all back away from the silver feline as she walked straight forward. Once the clearing open, her ruby frowned eyes soften slightly when she saw a trembling child kneeling and covered her face in attempt to protect herself. Her back facing the fountain and Mizuki’s ruby eyes scanned her bruised body and arms. Her frown deepened again, now more dangerously. ‘How dare they do this to her.’ She seethed.

“L-lady Mizuki…?” Some person called her name and that enough caught the child’s attention and she looked up with amber eyes widen. Looks like Kumiko had been crying a lot, because the tears stains on her eyes and cheeks were still there as her eyes had gone puffy and red from crying. Their eyes met; her frighten amber eyes are filled with hope when she saw the silver feline in front of her.

Mizuki’s palm open and slowly appeared in the black smoke was her trustworthy scythe in her hands. The villagers in dazed at the sight and some even begin to cheer, “Kill that human!” Hearing those was enough to make Kumiko’s heart stopped, ‘M-mizuki-nee?’ She thought in fright once more with wide eyes. The silver feline stared at her and later pointed the scythe direction at the villagers, “Shut up, you’re all so noisy.” She glared.

Cold dead silence drop again. Mizuki walked towards her and kneeled down in eye level. Soft crimson eyes met huge wide amber ones, “What are you doing here?” She muttered.

“I-I ran away from my v-village, I di-didn’t know this is your village…” Kumiko answered still trembling under the cold gazes from the villagers.

“Why did you run away then?” Mizuki still continued looking at her. Kumiko looked down at the ground and nipped her bottom lip, “A-actually, they k-kicked me out because I-I just found a red baby bird…” She said and revealed a small bundle of red on her stomach- maybe that’s why she pulled her legs to her chest that she had protected that bird all the time. But that red bird seems like-

Red Falcon!” The villager’s burst and at the same time, Kumiko’s eyes widen in realization and looked down back at the baby red bird, “R-red Falcon? I-is that why they kicked me out?”

Mizuki also widen her eyes in shocked, “Kumiko, how in the world you manage to touch it without getting burned?”

“B-but this bird need help, a-and I can hear its talking. It needs m-my help.” Mizuki looked down at the bundle of red who kept on nuzzling into Kumiko’s stomach to find warmth- even so this Red Falcon still an infant and in powerless stage, but a Red Falcon is still a Red Falcon and it’s still quite unbelievable for Kumiko, who manage to tame this one of the strongest birds at this young age. Usually any normal person will get burned by them, but here, Kumiko herself unintentionally proves that she’s the only one who didn’t get into any flame not even a peck of fire from the red bird.

That’s only lead to one conclusion, she’s not a human

“That girl may be one of the strongest Winged Creatures that people keeps talking about.” Villagers begin to burst their bubbles.

“She’s not human! She’s dangerous!” And those statements hit Kumiko hard so badly that she’s in the burst of tears again. The tear dropped on the red infant’s feathery head and it looked up at the girl with realization. The little Red Falcon then hopped from the warm place and looked at the villagers while glaring daggers at them. The villagers backed away from the bird in fright.

And right after that, it gave a shock to both Kumiko and Mizuki- in one mighty roar, despite its tiny body of an infant Red Falcon, came out bursts of flames from its golden beak shooting towards the villagers. Mizuki and Kumiko quickly stood up, startled. In the matter of seconds, half of the village engulf in flames and blazes. The Half breed’s village was soon filled with screams of fright.

“N-No! Don’t!” Kumiko ran to the little bird. Mizuki snapped back, “Kumiko, No! It’s dangerous!”

Wars in the village began and Mizuki got her weapons ready to protect the brunette from any harm while the brunette tried and literally manage to calm the baby Red Falcon from keeping firing flames to the village.

~~~*~~~
“Mizuki-nee!” The brunette cried looking up at the half-feline who covered with bruises and wounds from protecting the little girl. Mizuki on the other hand didn’t mind at all, she wanted to protect her- and that’s final. That’s why she was not feeling any regret at all when she turned her back from her clan- her own species. Her ruby silted eyes looked down at Kumiko who still holding on to the mighty red bird in place, “Kumiko, I need you to get out of here with Jynx and Hexy.”
“I don’t want to leave you behind!” Mizuki expected that answer from her- so she smiled, “I knew that, so I won’t make you choose.”
The child blinked in confused, “Huh? Wha- AH!” She screamed in surprised when a younger boy- but taller than the young brunette picked her up with ease. Kumiko have never seen this boy before- he had white, completely white hair but his front bangs were a deep shade of violet and his eyes were the same color as his bangs with flecks of red in them.
“Jinx,” Mizuki nodded to the human form of her cat, “Go with Hexy. Take her somewhere far and make sure no one can track her down with her scent.” The owner of the two cats turned- just on cue, a woman came close; she had long white hair as well but her front bangs were a paler shade of violet and those same pair of eyes were more platinum in color. She spoke, “I’ve already cleared the path. There will be no one who can oppose us now, Lady Mizuki.”
Mizuki nodded at that and turned her back from them. But the brunette begins to protest and cried, “Mizuki-nee!! Please come with us too!”
"I can't. I have to stay and hold them out,"
"N-No," Kumiko chocked in her tears, "M-Mizu-!"
“GO WITH HER NOW, HEXY!" The silver feline commanded.
A scream of sad frustration from Kumiko was left behind after the two transformed-cats disappeared in a black blur with the brunette. Now it’s left to Mizuki to face alone the outraged people of her kind.
Her silver bangs covered her red eyes. No expressions left on her face- but as the villagers came by just in time after Kumiko’s escape, they placed most of their swords and daggers pointed straight towards Mizuki.
“Where’s that creature?! That girl is a monster from the very beginning after all! She is not needed in this world- and must eliminate her once and for all, Mizuki! Show her to us now! Give it up!” One of the villagers began to roar which it turned into a large agreement voiced out by the others. Mizuki looked down on the floor- her bangs swayed over her eyes and face as her shoulders shook. The villagers kept their volume down in curious of her answer.
But it was only to be heard a laughter from the infamous silver Grim Reaper.
Mizuki’s head looked up- showing her smirk and red eyes gleam into the darkness that made some half-felines shiver down their spine, “I’m not giving her up to you all,”
“ARE YOU BETRAYING US?! YOUR OWN KIND?!” The woman’s voice shook in angered.
“My own kind? Who treat me like a dirt and monster from the beginning? Honestly- I have no need to give my attention about all of you even so you are just like me.”
Several gasps of horror were heard.
“But if I gave the girl to you- it was I, who betrayed our friendship. So I am still not a traitor.” The silver head’s eyes narrowed dangerously- taking her trusted scythe in her hands once again. Despite of her wounded and bruised batter body, she still took her stance up and begins to fight- she lunged forward, getting ready to swing her scythe forward.
She didn’t mind the blood she shed by her own hand-
Nor the scream of mercy or agony from these so called her own kind.
Because, even so black dirtied memories shall engrave in her mind and heart.
She will never let this friendship she had-
And that girl’s warmth perished just like hers.
Even if many swords opposed her, even if many daggers had been thrown at her or she been thrown into the darkest of dungeon, Mizuki Neko sworn on her body and soul to protect her no matter what it takes. She finally admitted now, that she loved the friendship she had with Kumiko. The silver-head let out a sincere smile at that thought before everything goes black in her vision. The last thing she heard- was the victory scream from the villagers and the cry she familiar of.
